Overmolding on elastic cable involves injecting plastic directly onto the cable core—whether it is an elastic textile cord or metal wire—to form end caps, ferrules, hooks, or functional parts that are fully integrated with the core, without any additional assemblies and without damaging the substrate.
This is one of the most specialized areas of expertise in ourplastic injection molding shop: combining a molded part with a flexible or wire-based support structure in situations where purely mechanical solutions reach their limits.
In detail
The component presented here, developed in collaboration with a demanding client, is radiation protection equipment designed for the operating room. It must adapt instantly to all types of prescription glasses and be adjustable in all directions in a completely intuitive manner.
After numerous unsuccessful mechanical tests, the solution came from a complete overmolding process on a shape-memory metal wire: we developed the part by closely following the concept envisioned by the customer. This is a fine showcase of our expertise in overmolding on wire-based substrates, , and a part we’re quite proud of.
We regularly combine plastic components with braided metal cables—for remote-opening systems , for example—as well as with spring wires, electrical cables, very-small-diameter tubes, or the ends of small actuators. This allows us to create specialized components, tailored to even the most specific applications.
The parts are manufactured at our plant in Comines, using tooling machined in our own workshops in Normandy and Pas-de-Calais. This fully integrated process— from tooling to the finished part—enables us to develop custom overmolds, from prototypes to mass production.
