Flat elastic: French custom manufacturer

Flat elastic is a woven, braided, or knitted elastic ribbon with a constant width and flat cross-section, whose elongation capacity depends on the elastomeric yarn combined with the cover yarns. A manufacturer of elastic bands for several generations, Sagaert weaves, braids, and knits them in its own factories in northern France, from 100-meter spools to runs of several million meters.

This comprehensive expertise—from yarn production and yarn dyeing to weaving—allows us to guide you toward the fabric, stretch, width, and color best suited to your application, whether it’s for haberdashery, technical apparel, or industrial use.

Woven, braided, or knitted: Which texture should you choose?

The structure of flat elastic depends on the manufacturing technique. In the woven method, the elastomeric thread is stretched as the warp and covered by weaving, resulting in a dense elastic that maintains its width—the most common type used in apparel and haberdashery. The braided method intertwines the threads in a spiral around the elastomeric thread, resulting in a more flexible elastic that stretches in all directions. Knitted elastic loops the threads into stitches, resulting in a lighter elastic that is stretchy both widthwise and lengthwise. The choice depends on the intended use: technical support, textile comfort, or mechanical strength under repeated tension.

Available Materials and Features
  • Materials: elastodiene, spandex, polyester, polyamide, polypropylene, cotton, aramid
  • Widths: custom-made, ranging from narrow haberdashery ribbon to wide technical elastic
  • Elongation: adjustable depending on the elastomeric filament and coverage ratio, up to technical elastic with no elongation (dimensionally stable)
  • Colors: wide range, thanks to our in-house yarn-dyeing process
Areas of Application

Our flat elastic bands are used in haberdashery, apparel manufacturing, furniture, medical applications, the automotive industry, interior design, stationery, and leisure activities—particularly for the production of masks, elastic ribbons, and technical cords. Some of these applications also require custom textile cutting after the weaving process.

Why choose Sagaert for your flat elastic?

Because we weave, braid, and knit in-house at our factories in Comines: you have a single point of contact from prototype to mass production, with no middleman between yarn selection and production. This integrated approach—the same one that allows us to manufacture our straps and ribbons—also enables us to design technical non-stretch elastic to meet specific technical specifications or brand requirements.

Flat Elastic: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between woven, braided, and knitted elastic?

Woven elastic covers the elastomeric thread through weaving to maintain a consistent width; braided elastic intertwines the threads in a spiral pattern for greater flexibility; and knitted elastic forms loops for a lighter feel and two-way stretch. The choice depends on the intended use of the garment.

What widths and lengths are available?

We manufacture custom products ranging from fine haberdashery to wide technical elastic—with stretch adjustable depending on the elastomeric yarn used—all the way to non-stretch technical elastic for applications that require dimensional stability.

What materials do you use for flat elastic?

Elastodiene, spandex, polyester, polyamide, polypropylene, cotton, and aramid, depending on the desired strength, elasticity, and finish.

Do you make custom flat elastic bands in small quantities?

Yes, we produce everything from a 100-meter spool to a batch of several million meters at our plants in Comines.

Do you offer custom dyeing for flat elastic?

Yes, we dye our yarn in-house, which allows us to offer a wide range of custom colors.

Do you manufacture technical elastic bands with no stretch?

Yes, for specifications that require dimensional stability rather than stretchability, we design technical elastics with controlled or zero elongation.

How can I send you my flat elastic design?

Please send us your requirements (width, stretch, material, color, length in meters) via our contact form: a technical representative will review your request and get back to you promptly.
